What problems do people come to The MindTraining Clinic for?

Phobias, Trauma, Panic Attacks, Stress, Depression, OCD and Generalised Anxiety are the most common reasons for people seeking help. Common phobias include agoraphobia (fear of public spaces or going out eg shopping), claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces which can include lifts and crowded areas), heights, spiders and even hospitals. People also come to us to re-train their minds if they are susceptible to depression, or if they have problems with anger management. Stress management is another focus of The MindTraining Clinic and in addition to intensive stress management courses, we also run shorter Relaxation Therapy sessions which can even be fit into your lunch hour! We specialise in helping people get back to work if they are off with mental health problems and work with  a number of corporate clients. You are welcome to have a chat with us to see if your problem is suitable for MindTraining.

Can you work with children?

Yes, we can work with children with certain conditions, especially phobias. Our youngest client was a four year old boy with a phobia of hand-dryers in public toilets. The problem was so severe that he wouldn’t visit the toilet anywhere if there were hand dryers – including at school. Successful training took just two sessions and in one week he was able to use any toilet and even quite happily use hand dryers himself.

What do you charge?

All sessions (50 minutes) must be booked and paid for in advance. Shorter relaxation therapy sessions (30 minutes) are available. Payment is by cash, cheque or credit card. Please contact for current prices.

Why is private therapy so expensive?

A good therapist will charge anything from £70 to £150 per session. This does seem like a lot of money but it doesn't all go to them!! A properly qualified therapist has to pay for the following from your fee:

  • Rent of rooms

  • Advertising and promotion

  • Materials

  • Membership of professional bodies

  • Insurance

  • Supervision (all therapists must be supervised, no matter how experienced)

  • Agency fees (if applicable)

  • Continued Professional development (no proper therapist is ever finished with training! we must learn and update our skills constantly).

  • Tax (of course!)

What will the therapy consist of?

The initial session will allow the trainer to understand your issue and develop a training plan. This plan will consist of various training tasks within and outside the sessions and it is essential that you undertake the training tasks agreed. The training is carefully designed to be manageable and aims to gradually re-train your mind to deal with the issue. You may need to keep a work diary to chart your progress.Sometimes, it is useful for the trainer to work with a client outside of the Clinic. For example, clients who are agoraphobic (scared of public places) might find it useful to be accompanied by the trainer on a few occasions as they carry out their training tasks. This will all be discussed during the initial session

Can I get this on the NHS?

Many therapies that can treat a range of conditions are available on the NHS and you would need to be referred through your GP. Our clients tend to come to The MindTraining Clinic because they don’t want to go through their GP for various reasons (eg they don’t want it on their medical records), or they do not want to wait a long time for help (NHS waiting lists can be long), or they want to pay for the convenience of making appointments to suit them

How long will the therapy take?

There are no guarantees, but training would usually be 4-6 weeks. On occasion more sessions are required. The aim is to train your mind quickly so as not to develop a reliance and dependence on the trainer. However, successful training requires commitment to undertake training tasks between sessions and clients who do not do these fully, will progress far more slowly.

Will I need follow-up sessions?

Follow-up is not usually required although is available for clients who prefer extra reassurance.

Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?

We try to offer flexible appointments where possible; most evenings and some Sunday morning appointments are available. And, of course day-time appts to suit too!
